Drain Cleaning in Paonia, CO

Paonia is a town of about 1,450 people in the North Fork Valley of Delta County, on the North Fork of the Gunnison River below Mount Lamborn. Settled in 1880 by Samuel Wade and William Clark and incorporated in 1902, it took its name from the peony, minus a vowel the post office would not allow. Orchards, wineries, coal and a strong arts community shape the town today.

Paonia homes and their sewer lines

Paonia homes are mostly older: Victorian and early 1900s houses near Grand Avenue, bungalows and small frame homes on the town grid, and farmhouses and newer houses on orchard land outside town.

The Town of Paonia runs water and sewer. Its drinking water comes from snowmelt-fed springs on Mount Lamborn and Landsend Peak, because the North Fork is too salty, and its sewer plant sits by the river. Farms and orchards outside town use septic.

Many Paonia houses still have clay sewer laterals and cast iron inside, often patched in several materials over a century.

Paonia drain problems

Paonia drain calls come mostly from the town's age and trees. Orchard and shade tree roots work into clay joints, old cast iron scales and rusts, and spring runoff on the North Fork raises the water table near the river.

What drain work usually costs in Paonia

JobTypical range
Kitchen, bath or toilet clog$125–$300
Main line cleared to the town main$200–$500
Root cutting in a clay lateral$250–$650
Camera inspection$150–$400
Orchard property septic line cleared$200–$550

Peonies, coal and peaches

Paonia was settled in 1880, after the Ute reservation was closed and the North Fork Valley opened to homesteaders. Samuel Wade, one of the founders, brought peony roots with him, and the town was meant to be named Paeonia until the post office objected to the spelling. It incorporated in 1902. Orchards came first, then coal: the valley's mines employed generations of residents, and Arch Coal's West Elk Mine still operates. Cherry Days, started in 1946, is one of Colorado's longest-running outdoor festivals, and High Country News and KVNF community radio are both based here.

In 2024 Paonia became an International Dark Sky Community, a small sign of how much the town values its quiet, rural character.

Spring water and a river plant

The North Fork of the Gunnison is too salty to be a good drinking water source, so the Town of Paonia draws its water from springs fed by snowmelt on Mount Lamborn and Landsend Peak. Wastewater goes the other direction, to the town's plant near the river. Flood damage reports have described bank erosion that threatened the plant's polishing pond and a main sewer line along the river, which were protected with rock and gabions. The town maintains its mains; the service line from each house is the owner's.

A town full of old pipe

Paonia is an old town, and many of its houses still drain through clay laterals and cast iron stacks that have been patched in pieces over a century. Clay joints separate and let in roots. Cast iron rusts from the inside and grows scale. A section may have been replaced in ABS during one remodel and PVC during another, with transitions that catch debris. When a Paonia line clogs more than once, a camera inspection is the quickest way to learn what is actually down there.

Orchard and shade tree roots

The town grid is lined with mature trees, and the valley around it is irrigated orchard land. Fruit trees, cottonwoods and silver maples all send roots toward water, and a cracked clay lateral leaking warm water is an easy target. A line that slows every summer and fall is a typical Paonia sign. Root cutting clears it; a yearly maintenance cut keeps it clear; repairing the worst joints ends the cycle.

Runoff season by the river

When snowmelt fills the North Fork each spring, the water table rises in the low parts of town near the river. Cracked lines can take in groundwater, and septic fields on low orchard ground can stay saturated, slowing every drain in the house. If your drains are slow only in May and June, tell the plumber, because the cause may be outside the pipe.

When a Paonia drain backs up

  1. 01

    Stop running water

Give the line a chance to drain before it overflows.

  2. 02

    Find the cleanout

Older Paonia homes may have one in the basement or crawlspace rather than outside.

  3. 03

    Note the season

Tell the plumber whether it happens every summer or during spring runoff.

  4. 04

    Ask about pipe material

If anyone has scoped the line before, share what they found.

Paonia warning signs

  • A slow drain every summer or fall
  • A Paonia toilet that gurgles during the washer's drain cycle
  • Rust flakes or scale coming out of a kitchen line
  • Sewer smell in an older basement
  • Soggy ground over an orchard property's leach field

Farms and orchards outside town

Homes on the orchards and ranches around Paonia use septic systems. Irrigation water can keep a field wet, so avoid flooding the area over the tank and field. Pump the tank on schedule and call when drains slow down rather than waiting for a backup.

What changes the price in Paonia

A simple clog is quick. Root cutting, camera work and old cast iron add time, and plumbers usually drive from Hotchkiss, Delta or farther, which adds a little. Ask what a Paonia visit should cost before work starts.

Dark skies, old houses and remodels

Paonia attracts newcomers who buy and restore old houses, and many of those remodels add bathrooms or move kitchens. Each new drain connected to a century-old lateral adds load to pipe that may already be cracked or full of roots. Before a remodel in Paonia, scope the main line from the cleanout to the town main; if it needs repair, doing it while the house is torn up costs far less than after new floors go in.

A camera inspection also shows whether the old line has the slope the new fixtures need.

Call if you notice

  • Fruit tree or shade tree roots in a Paonia clay lateral
  • Cast iron scale stopping an older Paonia kitchen line
  • Slow drains near the North Fork during spring runoff
  • A septic field on orchard land that stays wet
  • Gurgling toilets when a washing machine drains in an older house
