Drain Cleaning in Victor, CO

Victor is the "City of Mines," a Teller County gold camp at 9,708 feet on the southern flank of Battle Mountain, six miles from Cripple Creek. Founded in 1891 and incorporated in 1894, it peaked near 18,000 people around 1900, rebuilt its downtown in brick after a fire burned the business district in August 1899, and still sits beside the working Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine.

Victor homes and their sewer lines

Most Victor homes are miners' cottages and Victorian houses from the 1890s and early 1900s, many restored, on streets that step up the mountainside. A few newer houses fill lots where older buildings were lost.

Homes inside the city are served by Victor's own water and sewer utilities. Water comes from Bison Park Reservoir through a raw water main more than 100 years old, which the city is replacing after a 2024 break. Owners maintain the sewer line from the house to the city main.

Under the old houses, drain lines are often cast iron or clay with joints that have shifted on the steep ground.

Victor drain problems

Nearly everything about a Victor drain call comes down to elevation and age. At almost 9,700 feet, frost reaches deep and stays late into spring, so lines under porches, in crawlspaces and in shallow trenches freeze. Century-old cast iron and clay lines scale, crack and settle on the hillside, and houses that sit empty for part of the year can freeze solid between visits.

What drain work usually costs in Victor

Service line cleared to the city main$200–$550
Thawing a frozen sewer or drain line$200–$650
Sewer camera inspection$150–$400
Jetting century-old cast iron$350–$900

The City of Mines

Victor was laid out in 1891 on the slope of Battle Mountain, home to many of the Cripple Creek Mining District's richest mines, and named for the Victor Mine. The Woods brothers struck gold in 1894 while digging a building foundation, and that find became the Gold Coin Mine. At its peak around 1900, Victor and the camps around it held something like 18,000 people. In August 1899 a fire burned the business district, and the town rebuilt in brick, which is why its downtown looks the way it does today.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine still runs large-scale open-pit operations on the hills beside town, while Victor's permanent population has settled under 400.

Houses built for a boom

Most of Victor's houses went up in a few frantic years in the 1890s, built quickly for miners and their families on streets that climb the mountainside. Indoor plumbing came later in many of them, added through a crawlspace or a corner of the cellar with whatever pipe was available. A century of repairs has left most houses with a mix of cast iron, clay, galvanized and plastic under the floor. Every joint between different materials is a place where paper and grease can catch, so a camera inspection is often the fastest way to find out why one Victor house clogs while its neighbor doesn't.

Frost at almost 9,700 feet

Victor is one of the highest towns in Colorado, and its winters are long. Frost can go deep and linger into May on shaded lots, and many old service lines were laid well above today's recommended depth. Lines under porches, in unheated crawlspaces and on the north side of houses freeze first. A slow drip from a faucet left running to protect the supply line can actually freeze inside a cold drain, building a plug one layer at a time. If a drain stops on a bitter morning, keep water use to a minimum and call to have it thawed from a cleanout with a steamer or warm-water jetter.

Homes left empty for part of the year

A good share of Victor houses are second homes or are empty for stretches while owners travel. A house left with the heat turned too low can freeze traps, drains and the service line, and when someone arrives and turns on the water, it backs up or leaks. If you will be away, keep the heat at a safe setting, or have the house properly winterized, with traps protected with RV antifreeze. Asking a neighbor to check the house after a cold snap can save a great deal of damage.

City water and sewer

The City of Victor provides water and sewer service inside city limits. Its raw water comes from Bison Park Reservoir through a main more than a century old that failed in March 2024 and is now being replaced with state grant help. On the sewer side, the city owns the mains, and owners are responsible for the line from the house to the main, including roots, breaks and freezing on that line. If a camera shows the problem at the connection to the main, the plumber can help you document it for the city.

When a Victor drain stops

  1. 01

    Check whether it's frozen

A drain that stopped after a cold night, with no prior slowing, is probably ice.

  2. 02

    Stop running water

Adding water to a frozen or clogged line spreads the backup.

  3. 03

    Find the cleanout

Many old houses have one in the cellar or crawlspace; some have none.

  4. 04

    Warn about access

Steep streets, snow and narrow alleys matter. Tell the plumber where to park.

Victor warning signs

  • A drain that stopped after a sub-zero night
  • Slow drains in a house just opened for the season
  • Sewer smell in a stone cellar
  • Repeat clogs in a kitchen's old cast iron line
  • Water at the lowest floor drain when the tub empties

Planning a visit up the hill

Plumbers serving Victor usually come from Woodland Park, Divide or the Colorado Springs area, and the drive over Highway 67 or up from Cañon City takes time, especially in snow. Combining clearing with a camera inspection on one trip makes sense in a town with this much old pipe.

What changes the price in Victor

Clearing a single fixture is quick. Thawing, steep and icy access, cramped crawlspaces and old cast iron that needs jetting all add time, and travel to Victor is part of most bills. Ask for the expected range before the plumber heads up.

Call if you notice

  • A sewer line freezing in a Victor cold snap
  • Drains slow in a century-old miner's cottage
  • Clogs where a steep service line levels out at the street
  • A burst or frozen trap in a house left empty over winter
  • Sewer smell in a stone or dirt-floor cellar

Victor drain questions

Who runs the sewer in Victor?+

The City of Victor runs water and sewer inside city limits. The line from your house to the city main is the owner's responsibility.

Why do Victor drains freeze so often?+

At about 9,700 feet, frost goes deep and lingers into spring, and many old lines were never buried below today's frost depth.

Can a frozen sewer line be thawed without digging?+

Usually. A plumber feeds a steamer or a jetter running warm water from a cleanout until the ice breaks free.
